Meet Student Board Member Eli George: A Voice for Five CUSD Schools

Eli George, a San Antonio High School student, is excited to represent not only his own school but also Condit Elementary, Sumner Danbury Elementary, Vista del Valle Elementary, and El Roble Intermediate School as a student board member for Claremont Unified School District. "The experience I'll gain and the opportunities I'll have are what excites me the most about being a student board member," Eli shares. He's already attended two board meetings and is eager to continue reporting on these five schools' incredible work and activities.

Eli balances his love for academics with playing softball and pursuing his passion for dance. He is committed to highlighting students' voices and believes his role on the board will make a difference by keeping the district informed about what's happening at each school. "I plan on prioritizing the students and getting their voices heard," Eli explains, and he is excited to share the unique experiences of the students he represents.

Eli is looking forward to personal growth through this role and hopes to one day attend UC San Diego and pursue his dream of becoming a dance teacher. We are proud to have Eli representing these five schools and can't wait to see his impact throughout the year!

Claremont High's Christopher Clark Honored for Dedication and Inclusion Efforts

In May 2024, Christopher Clark from Claremont High School attended the SELPA Administrators of California Legislative Sharing Day in Sacramento as a guest of the East San Gabriel Valley SELPA. During the event, Christopher shared his experiences as the Team Manager of the Claremont High Varsity Football Team, capturing the interest of Senator Anthony Portantino, who promised to attend a game the following season.

Five months later, on October 4th, Senator Portantino made good on his promise, attending a Claremont Wolfpack football game. Joined by district officials, school board members, Claremont city officials, Wolfpack team staff, and Christopher's friends and family, Senator Portantino presented Christopher with an award for his dedication to promoting inclusion within the team.

Christopher's commitment to inclusion reflects SELPA's motto: "Making it Happen—Each Student, Every Day!" As a senior, we are excited to see what the rest of this year holds for him. Congratulations, Christopher, and Go Claremont Wolfpack!

Honoring Olympic Bronze Medalist and CHS Alumna Brittany Brown

Claremont Unified School District welcomed home Brittany Brown, a Claremont High School alumna, and Olympic Bronze Medalist from the 2024 Paris Olympics, with an unforgettable pep rally at CHS.

Students and athletes from across CUSD took an active role in the celebration, lining the main walkway to the CHS quad to cheer Brittany on as she arrived in a convertible. Their enthusiastic support created an electric atmosphere that reached its peak when Brittany stopped by the CHS band and danced as they played, making the celebration even more memorable.

During the event, a special tribute to the late Duane K. Jackman, founder of the Duane K. Jackman Invitational Track Meet at Vista del Valle Elementary, was highlighted. His wife, Lee Jackman, gave a heartfelt speech, expressing how proud Duane would be to see the track meet he founded produce an Olympian like Brittany. Vista students recreated the event’s flag and presented it to Brittany on stage, further showcasing the tradition and pride she represents.

From competing at the Duane K. Jackman Invitational as a young athlete to standing on the Olympic podium, Brittany’s journey is a testament to the values we strive for at CUSD. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments and grateful for the inspiration she brings to our students and community.

Thank you, Brittany, for being a remarkable role model!

Abby Haughton: El Roble's Youngest Published Author

Claremont Unified School District is proud to celebrate Abigail Haughton, a talented 7th grader at El Roble Intermediate School, who recently participated as the youngest author at a local library event in September. Abby showcased her first book, which she began writing in 3rd grade and published through Kindle Direct Publishing. She credits her passion for writing to the inspiring teachers at Vista del Valle Elementary School, where she developed her love for storytelling through their Writers Workshop program. With over 120 copies of her book sold, Abigail is excited to release a sequel later this month. Her narrated audiobook is also in the works, and we are eager to see her continued success!

Parents, Technology, and Schools: A Digital Connection Series

Claremont Unified School District has been proud to host the Parents, Technology, and Schools: A Digital Connection series, offering valuable insights to parents about the latest digital tools, online safety, and tech management. This interactive series aims to empower parents with the knowledge they need to support their children in today's technology-driven world.

Our past events have covered topics such as "Canvas for Parents" and "Parent Connection Q," providing parents with essential information on navigating educational apps and tools. The sessions have been well-received, with parents appreciating the practical advice and guidance offered.

Two important events remain in this series. On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., we will host an in-person workshop at El Roble Intermediate titled Digital Citizenship: Keeping Students Safe in the Digital World. This session will provide hands-on support for parents looking to enhance their understanding of online safety and digital well-being for their children.

The final session, Canvas for Students, will take place on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. This virtual session will help parents better understand the Canvas platform, empowering them to better support their children's educational journey.
