We also highlight the dedication of CUSD's Clinical Therapist, Lisa Serrano, whose unwavering commitment helps homeless youth navigate their challenges. Together, these stories reflect our collective effort to create a supportive and nurturing environment for every child, ensuring they have the opportunity to thrive.

Condit Student Leads Heartwarming Toy Drive for Kids Impacted by the  Foster Care System

Elizabeth Hayward, a student from Condit Elementary, has launched a toy drive to provide summer toys for children impacted by the foster care system. Drawing from her personal experience, Elizabeth passionately organized this initiative to ensure that children in similar situations have something special to enjoy during the summer months.

"I was in foster care, so I thought it would be nice to do this," Elizabeth shared. "They get a lot of stuff in winter but don't have anything for summer." With the support of her school and community, Elizabeth created and posted a flyer around the community, receiving numerous donations from students, teachers, and other community members.

Elizabeth's aunt, Connie Lannom, emphasized the importance of providing new items for the children. "We want to make sure they know they're not getting someone's leftovers. They are special to us, and just because they're going through a rough season in life, that's not their whole story," she said.

Through this toy drive, Elizabeth hopes to bring joy and a sense of love and appreciation to children impacted by the foster care system. "I just want them to know that they are loved and people care about them," she said. Elizabeth's initiative is a beautiful example of how one student's empathy and determination can make a significant impact on the lives of others.

CHS Alumna Nita Watson Champions Mental Health Awareness with 5K Event

Slider is playing

Nita Watson, a proud alumna of Claremont High School's Class of 2001, returned to her alma mater on Saturday, May 25, 2024, to host a significant event promoting mental health awareness. As the Director of The Self-Care Lab, Boxing, and Fitness Club in Montclair, Watson organized a 5K run to bring attention to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder.

"This event is our creative, authentic way of raising awareness about mental health," Watson explained. "Running is excellent for the mind, spirit, and body, and it brings communities together, fostering diversity and culture." Watson's inspiration for the 5K stems from the regular runs her club held in Pomona. Recognizing the therapeutic benefits and community-building potential of running.

The choice to host the event at CHS was personal for Watson, who experienced firsthand the transformative power of community support during her school years. "Mental health doesn't discriminate; it affects everyone. Bringing this event to my alma mater bridges the gap between Montclair, Pomona, and Claremont," she said. Watson emphasized the importance of support and community, sharing, "All you need is a little bit of support. It's inspiring to have like-minded people around you. Iron sharpens iron, and that's what keeps people moving forward."

Watson's passion for mental health advocacy is deeply rooted in her own experiences. Growing up in a challenging environment, she found refuge and growth through community support. "I was a foster youth, and seeing kids in similar situations reminds me of myself. It's not just a job for me; it's a calling," she shared. Her message to the community is clear: "Read the book, not the cover. Mental health affects everyone, so make sure to talk to someone, prioritize self-care, and build a supportive community."

Through her dedication and vision, Nita Watson continues to make a significant impact. She encourages others to prioritize mental health and fosters a sense of belonging and support within the community.

Bithiah's Family Services: A Place of Hope for Foster and Homeless Youth

We are spotlighting Bithiah's Family Services, a nonprofit organization that supports foster and homeless youth in our community. Founded by Keith and Michelle Thompson in 2015, Bithiah's Family Services began as a group home for medically fragile infants and toddlers. Over the years, it has evolved into a comprehensive support system for vulnerable children and their families.

A Legacy of Compassion

Michelle Thompson, the Executive Director, and co-founder, shares the organization's journey. "We started Bithiah's Family Services to fill the gaps we experienced as foster parents. Our mission is to provide a holistic support system that addresses not only the immediate needs but also the long-term well-being of the children and families we serve," she explains.

Grace Favatella, the Housing Program Director, elaborates on the comprehensive services offered. "We provide wrap-around services including therapy, support groups, and reunification classes. We aim to ensure that every child and family feels supported and cared for, especially during the most challenging times."

Services That Transform Lives

Bithiah's Family Services offers a range of services designed to meet the diverse needs of foster and homeless youth:

  • Resource Centers: Located in Pomona and San Marcos, these centers provide court-approved training, clinician-led support groups, tutoring, and tangible supplies. Foster and kinship families receive essential items for each child they welcome into their homes, and aging-out foster youth receive necessities.

  • Housing Programs: With a new three-year grant, Bithiah's Family Services will soon offer housing for transitional youth (18-24 years). This program includes free housing, savings accounts, financial literacy, meal planning, free therapy, and case management, all aimed at setting young adults on a path to success.

  • Community Events: Monthly events at the resource centers foster connections and build bridges within the community. These events support kinship families, foster parents, and reunifying families, creating a network of care and compassion.

Stories of Hope

The impact of Bithiah's Family Services is profound. Grace Favatella shares, "We receive calls from foster parents needing immediate support for new placements. Our team quickly gathers essentials like clothes and diapers, ensuring the children have what they need right away. It's about providing stability during a turbulent time."

Lyndsey Wondoloski, the Donor Liaison, emphasizes the importance of community partnerships. "We work closely with local child welfare agencies and community organizations to ensure we can meet the diverse needs of the families we serve. It's a collaborative effort to provide the best support possible."

Looking Ahead

As Bithiah's Family Services approaches its ten-year anniversary, the organization continues to expand its reach and impact. Michelle Thompson reflects, "Our journey has been one of growth and learning. We are committed to serving our community and providing the support we once needed ourselves."

For families and individuals looking for support or interested in contributing to this vital cause, Bithiah's Family Services welcomes you with open arms. As Michelle Thompson advises, "Don't hesitate to ask for help. Everyone is trying their best, and it's okay to seek support and guidance."

Supporting Homeless and Foster Youth: An Interview with a Clinical Therapist

The Claremont Unified School District (CUSD) is making a significant impact on the lives of homeless and foster youth through the dedicated efforts of Lisa Serrano, CUSD's Clinical Therapist for homeless and foster youth. "My role is to provide support, clinical services, and regular check-ins with our students. I work closely with foster parents, guardians, and parents during reunification to ensure we address the student's needs, whether they require clinical support or just someone to talk to."

Lisa emphasized the importance of addressing trauma in her work. "Many of our students have experienced significant traumas that impact their academic and social ability. I aim to equip them with the tools they need to process these experiences and move forward."

Building Trust and Consistency

One of Lisa's key strategies is building trust and providing consistency. "Our students need to know that someone is reliably there for them, especially when they are in new or unstable environments. I establish a consistent schedule so they can depend on seeing me regularly, which helps them feel secure and supported," Lisa explained.

Challenges and Triumphs

Working with foster and homeless youth presents unique challenges but also brings moments of triumph. Lisa described the process of building rapport with initially guarded students. "The breakthrough moments come when they share more about their lives. It's about creating a safe space for them to open up."

A Message to the Community

Lisa emphasized the importance of community awareness and involvement. "Our community is incredibly generous and giving. When people understand the needs, they want to help. It's crucial to challenge the perception that homelessness and foster care issues don't exist in Claremont. These issues are present in every community, and raising awareness is key."

A Bright Future

With the dedication of Lisa Serrano and the entire CUSD team, the future looks brighter for homeless and foster youth in Claremont. By providing consistent, compassionate support, they are helping these students overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.
